For more than 120 years now, the Tonhalle Zurich has been the musical heart of the city and home to the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich. From word-famous pieces to commissioned compositions, their repertoire is wide, and the orchestra’s recordings have won multiple awards. The orchestra is one of the best in the world.

About 100 musicians from 20 nations are currently playing under the 11th conductor, Paavo Järvi, who took over the position from the 2019/2020 season – to the delight of the orchestra’s musicians. Many say about Järvi that he has a special energy, and that with him, no concert is ever like the other. The music director is originally from Tallinn, where he studied percussion and conducting, before emigrating to the US in 1980. He studied under Leonard Bernstein and, in 2001, finally became a head conductor in Cincinnati. Career eras in Germany, France and Japan followed. Today, he therefore has strong links to musicians from all over the world, as well as to composers in his home country, Estonia.

The Tonhalle itself has quite a long history: the orchestra has its origin in the 1860s and from its very beginning has been shaped by some truly outstanding conductors and musicians. The Tonhalle Zurich concert hall was built at the end of the 19th century and, in recent years, has been comprehensively renovated. Now back to its old splendour, the audience can experience its spectacular acoustics anew.

Klassische Musik in historischer Atmosphäre und mit herausragender Akustik

Seit über 120 Jahren ist die Tonhalle Zürich das musikalische Herz der Stadt und Heimat das Tonhalle-Orchesters Zürich. Von weltbekannten Stücken bis hin zu Auftragskompositionen, das Repertoire ist breit gefächert und die Aufnahmen des Orchesters wurden mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Das Orchester gehört zu den Weltbesten.

Die sagen über Järvi, er erzeuge eine besondere Energie und kein Konzert sei wie das andere. Der Music Director stammt ursprünglich aus Tallinn, wo er Perkussion und Dirigieren studierte, bevor er nach 1980 in die USA auswanderte. Dort studierte er bei Leonard Bernstein und wurde schließlich 2001 Chefdirigent in Cincinnati. Es folgten Stationen in Deutschland, Frankreich und Japan. Heute hält er enge Kontakte zu Musikern aus aller Welt und zu Komponisten in seiner estnischen Heimat.

Die Tonhalle selbst blickt auf eine lange Geschichte zurück: Das Orchester hat seinen Ursprung in den 1860er Jahren und ist seit Anbeginn geprägt durch herausragende Dirigenten und Orchester-Musiker. Die Tonhalle Zürich selbst wurde zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erbaut und in den vergangenen Jahren umfassend saniert. Nun erstrahlt sie wieder in alter Pracht und Konzertbesucher können die klangliche Brillanz komplett neu erleben.
