‘Fasten your seatbelt!’ and ‘Lift to open!’ – two phrases that every person who has ever flew on a plane has probably heard. These have now also become the motto of TARTAR, a leather manufacturer from Berlin, founded in 2012.
Alexandre Mayer, founder of TARTAR, came up with the idea during some air travel of his own. “The belt was lying in front of me on the seat, and I thought that the fastener might be perfect for an everyday belt made of leather,” he recalls. He started experimenting with different kinds of leather, and soon realised that one of his prototypes had started to attract a great deal of attention among his acquaintances. This encouraged him to found the manufactory where he now works together with his partner Robert Ojurovic.
Tartar now offers not only belts, but also handbags, hip bags, bracelets, keyholders and special belts with two fasteners. They are all made of high-quality vegetable-tanned cowhide from Tuscany. The leather neither breaks nor flakes. The belts are available in three sizes and a variety of colours for both buckles and leather, and every belt’s length can be adjusted individually.
The distinctive mark of every TARTAR product is the aircraft buckle. “To include this central element in every product is great fun, and the challenge that drives us in our work,” Mayer concludes.
