Celebrating Christmas without remorse – that’s the vision behind the Dresdener Holzbengel (Dresden Wooden Rascals) wood workshop. Founded in early 2022 by Sebastian Langula and Martin Erler, Dresdener Holzbengel offers an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional Christmas tree.

“The idea originated from a desire to enjoy the festive season without wasting resources,” recalls Martin. “When Sebastian presented his concept of a reusable wooden Christmas tree, we were excited. From there, it was a natural step to introduce the concept to a wider audience.”

In Germany alone, over 31 million Christmas trees are sold each year – most of them firs and spruces that take around a decade to grow, only to dry out and be thrown away after a couple of weeks. Martin and Sebastian have come up with the perfect solution: hand-crafted wooden trees from sustainably managed forests in the Dresden region.

“Our Christmas trees only need to be bought once and can be enjoyed for many years,” explains Sebastian. “The wood is kept in its natural form, without pesticides, fertilisers or artificial additives. Everything is processed locally with minimal waste – even the bark is left on as a natural protective layer.”

As the demand for sustainable products continues to grow, Dresdener Holzbengel is perfectly in tune with the times. Families, couples, singles, nurseries and even businesses appreciate the tree not only as a sustainable option, but also as a low-maintenance design element. “With its timeless, simple design, our Christmas tree fits into any interior and eliminates the annual hassle of buying and disposing of a real tree,” adds Martin.

But it’s not just the environmental benefits that make this tree so appealing: those with allergies as well as pet owners benefit from the needle-free design, which is allergen-free and highly flame-resistant – an important safety feature for households using real candles!

A Dresdener Holzbengel Christmas tree has many advantages, not least financial: “After about three years, our tree is more cost-effective than a fir tree bought every year. For our customers, it’s an investment in a product that pays off in the long term and actively supports the protection of the environment.”
