Locarno is not only one of the most popular Swiss holiday destinations and renowned location of the famous film festival: the city is also an ideal place for conferences and corporate events. The PalaCinema is a unique project: it is headed by the PalaCinema Locarno SA and was financed by public and private investors. Here, the public and private sector work closely together. “The PalaCinema is our excellence project,” says Michael Lämmler, director of enjoyARENA SA/ Locarno events, a consortium of a local cultural event centre, a local event agency and the expertise of the ARENA group, one of the largest cinema operators in Switzerland. enjoyARENA SA is widely recommended as the first point of contact for all sorts of events, and offers up a competent and experienced team. “Personal care is a key feature,” says Lämmler. The event team accompanies clients from the very first enquiry and offers flexible and individual solutions – from congresses to team building events, and from customer events to general meetings of small and large companies.

The PalaCinema consists of three modern cinema and congress auditoriums – one with more than 450 seats, two with 130 seats each – and a 700-square-metre multi-purpose hall with a spectacular roof terrace, a foyer, diverse meeting rooms and the unique Piazza Remo Rossi, with its 1,500 square metres in total. It opened its doors two years ago, during the 70th anniversary of the Locarno Film Festival. Today, among other collaborators, PalaCinema houses the festival organisation, the film school CISA, the Ticino Film Commission and the SUPSI, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland.

The film festival, founded in 1946 as third-largest film festival in Europe, counts among the oldest in the world and puts its main focus on independent films. But the open-air cinema at the Piazza Grande also shows commercial blockbusters. “The open-air cinema at the Piazza Grande in the centre of Locarno has the largest screen in Europe,” reveals Roberto Pomari, director of the PalaCinema SA. Before the Film Festival arrives into town, the Piazza Grande also serves as the home of the Moon&Stars Festival, a pop music event with a line-up of international stars. This year in July, for example, Snow Patrol, Christina Aquilera and Eros Ramazzotti will perform here.

As one of the sunniest regions in Switzerland, the city is already a popular holiday region and is also enjoying a growing popularity as a location for events and national and international corporate meetings. The PalaCinema team, therefore, has become highly experienced in organising large events.

“From cultural to corporate events, the whole range is possible,” says Roberto Pomari. The main focus lies on individual support: “We accompany our clients from A to Z. They get a central contact person who will know people on site, speak their language and understand their mentality,” says F&B manager Markus Plüss. Locarno has always been a cultural melting pot between the German and Italian speaking part of Switzerland, and that reflects in its mentality and the people. Locarno is an open and international city and treats its guests accordingly. The city combines a Mediterranean temperament with Swiss competence. And even though the main language is Italian, signs in shops, for example, are usually in both languages, which contributes to Swiss-Germans feeling very welcome here, as well. “We foster openness,” both Pomari and Lämmler agree.

The PalaCinema offers various event solutions. As well as the built-in event technology and in-house catering, it is always possible to book extra event technology or catering – depending on the client’s individual requirements and wishes. The team also offers support when booking hotel rooms in Locarno and the neighbouring Ascona, the city in Switzerland with the most five-star hotels. The PalaCinema shows: Locarno is not only a holiday destination, but also attractive from an economic point of view.

From 2020 onwards, the city will also be better connected, thanks to a new high-speed train connection: it will then only take 27 minutes from Lugano to Locarno. From Zurich, the city can be reached in two and a half hours. Already today, PalaCinema is working closely together with the Swiss railway company SBB, to be able to provide an even better service in future.

Das PalaCinema umfasst drei moderne Kino-Kongresssäle – einer mit 450 Sitzplätzen, zwei kleinere mit je 130 Plätzen – einem 700m2 großen Mehrzwecksaal mit einer spektakulären Rooftop-Terrasse, das große Foyer, diverse Sitzungsräume und die einmalige Piazza Remo Rossi mit insgesamt 1500m2. Das 1946 gegründete Locarno Film Festival gehört als drittgrößtes Filmfestspiel Europas zu den ältesten der Welt und hat einen Hauptfokus auf den Autorenfilm. Insbesondere bei den Freiluftveranstaltungen auf der Piazza Grande zeigt das Festival aber eher auch kommerzielle Filme, erzählt Roberto Pomari, Direktor der PalaCinema SA: „Der Open-Air-Kinosaal auf der Piazza Grande im Zentrum von Locarno hat die größte Leinwand Europas.“ Neben dem Filmfestival wird jährlich auf der Piazza Grande das Moon&Stars Festival organisiert, ein Pop-Festival mit zahlreichen internationalen Stars. In diesem Jahr treten im Juli beispielsweise Snow Patrol, Christina Aguilera und Eros Ramazzotti auf.

Bereits heute ist die Stadt in einer der sonnenreichsten Gegenden der Schweiz nicht nur eines der beliebtesten Feriengebiete, sondern erfreut sich großer Popularität als Austragungsort größerer Events oder Firmenveranstaltungen nationaler und internationaler Kunden. Das Team des PalaCinema ist also sehr erfahren in der Organisation großer Events.

„Von Kultur- bis Firmenevents ist bei uns die gesamte Bandbreite möglich“, sagt Roberto Pomari. Dabei steht die individuelle Betreuung im Fokus: „Wir begleiten unsere Klienten von A bis Z. Und das spiegelt sich in Mentalität und Menschen: Locarno ist eine weltoffene und internationale Stadt, die ihren Gästen entsprechend begegnet. Die Stadt verbindet südländisches Temperament und schweizerische Kompetenz. Und obwohl die offizielle Sprache Italienisch ist, sind zum Beispiel Beschriftungen in Geschäften meistens zweisprachig und auch die Deutsch-Schweizer fühlen sich hier zuhause. „Hier wird Offenheit gepflegt“, sagen Pomari und Lämmler.

Das PalaCinema bietet verschiedene Veranstaltungslösungen. Neben der ohnehin vorhandenen Veranstaltungstechnik und dem in-house Catering, lassen sich ergänzende Ausstattung oder externes Catering hinzubuchen – ganz nach individuellen Wünschen und Bedürfnissen. Und auch bei der Buchung von Hotels in Locarno und dem benachbarten Ascona, dem Ort mit den meisten 5-Sterne-Hotels, unterstützt das Team. Das PalaCinema zeigt: Locarno ist nicht nur eine Touristenstadt, sondern auch wirtschaftlich attraktiv.

Ab 2020 wird die Stadt zudem mit einer neuen Hochgeschwindigkeits-Bahnverbindung verkehrstechnisch besser angeschlossen: Von Lugano ist Locarno dann innerhalb von 27 Minuten zu erreichen. Von Zürich sind es dann gerade einmal 2 ½ Stunden. Bereits heute arbeitet PalaCinema eng mit der Schweizer Bundes Bahn SBB zusammen, um Kunden in Zukunft einen noch besseren Service anzubieten.
