The words ‘art’ or ‘museum’ may well tempt many to think of venerable exhibition halls and the old masters.

The MUCA (Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art) in Munich is something of a novelty in Germany’s museum landscape, and not only in architectural terms. Stephanie Utz, who opened the museum in 2016 with her husband Christian, explains: “MUCA is the first of its kind in Germany. It is an innovative space for urban and contemporary art. And thanks to our outstanding collection and exhibitions of internationally acclaimed artists from the urban art scene, the MUCA receives considerable recognition also from abroad.”

Works of renowned and emerging artists are shown on a total of three levels and on extended exhibition areas in the adjacent ‘MUCA Bunker’. Currently, visitors can marvel at the works by the US-American artist SWOON, renowned mixed-media artist and one of the most significant women in the street-art scene.

“Art,” says Christian Utz, “can change our view of the world! That is one of the reasons why we also offer platforms to experimental and cross-genre formats such as ‘Kunstlabor2’, a project which in summer will transform a former health-centre in Munich-Maxvorstadt into exhibition spaces and artist residencies.”

Bei den Wörtern ‚Kunst’ und ‚Museum’ mögen viele zunächst an ehrwürdige Hallen und alte Meister denken.

Das MUCA (Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art) in München ist nicht nur architektonisch ein Novum in Deutschlands Museumslandschaft. Stephanie Utz, die das Museum 2016 zusammen mit ihrem Mann Christian eröffnete, erklärt: „Das MUCA ist das erste seiner Art in Deutschland. Durch unsere herausragende Sammlung und Wechselausstellungen mit namhaften Künstler/innen der Urban Art Szene, erhält das MUCA auch international große Anerkennung.”

Auf insgesamt drei Ebenen und erweiterten Ausstellungsflächen im angrenzenden ‚MUCA Bunker’ sind die Werke renommierter, aber auch aufstrebender Künstler ausgestellt. Aktuell begeistern Werke der US-Amerikanischen Künstlerin SWOON, eine der bedeutendsten Frauen in der Street-Art-Szene und anerkannte Mixed-Media-Künstlerin, die Besucher des MUCA.

„Kunst”, so Christian Utz, „kann den Blick auf die Welt verändern! Auch deshalb bieten wir experimentellen und genreübergreifenden Formaten eine Plattform, beispielsweise in Projekten wie dem ,Kunstlabor2’, das im Sommer ein ehemaliges Gesundheitshaus in München-Maxvorstadt in Ausstellungsflächen und Künstlerateliers verwandeln wird.“
