Not your standard selfie

Life-sized black and white portraits on photo paper – that is something truly special in our digital time. The worldwide unique walk-in camera IMAGO was initially developed for technical test by physicist Werner Kraus, and only used much later for artistic purposes. After it had been forgotten for 30 years, the camera has now been back in action since 2006. The result? Art to a scale of 1:1.

The IMAGO in Berlin is not only the world’s largest analogue self-portrait camera, but also an enchanting counter piece to today’s digitisation frenzy. The artistic life-sized snapshots have a magical touch. They are unique prints without somewhat of a safety net – exactly the way photography was originally devised and intended.

Susanna Kraus, actress and daughter of the inventor, presents the impressive camera in her Berlin studio: “IMAGOgraphy is the encounter with yourself. The contemporary photographic medium for self-reflection in an era of a visual flood.” The photos are different than what we are used to. They appear real and seem to capture a piece of the soul.

In order to take a self-portrait, you have to walk into the camera’s body (8 x 3 x 4 metres) where you are confronted with your side-correct mirror image. After taking the picture, it only takes 15 minutes before the 60 x 200 centimetres portraits are ready to take home. The IMAGO Berlin is an unforgettable experience not just for single or group sessions (families, couples, friends), for exclusive events and corporate parties, but also for product and marketing campaigns.

Das etwas andere Selfie

Lebensgroße schwarz-weiß Portraits auf Fotopapier, das ist in unserer digitalen Zeit etwas Besonderes. Die weltweit einzige begehbare Riesenkamera IMAGO wurde ursprünglich vom Physiker Werner Kraus für technische Versuche entwickelt und später erst für künstlerische Zwecke verwendet. Susanna Kraus, Schauspielerin und Tochter des Erfinders, präsentiert die imposante Kamera in ihrem Berliner Studio: „IMAGOgraphie ist die Begegnung mit sich selbst. Das zeitgemäße fotografische Medium der Selbstbetrachtung, in einer Zeit der Flut des Visuellen.“ Die Fotos sind anders, als das, was wir gewöhnt sind. Sie wirken echt und scheinen ein Stück Seele zu zeigen.

Um sich zu portraitieren geht man in den Kamerakorpus (8 x 3 x 4 Meter) hinein und steht seinem seitenrichtigen Spiegelbild gegenüber. Schon 15 Minuten nachdem man ausgelöst hat sind die 60 x 200 Zentimeter großen Portraits fertig zum Mitnehmen. Die IMAGO Berlin ist ein einmaliges Erlebnis nicht nur für Einzel- oder Gruppensessions (Familien, Paare, Freunde), für exklusiven Events und Firmenfeiern, sondern auch für Produkt- und Markenkampagnen.
