gernot schulz : architektur is an owner-operated office with a team of 30 that always strives to explore architectural ways and means to implement change in the current educational landscape.

Innovative school buildings following an open learning principle are a core mission at the Cologne based office: “Nothing in our society is more outdated than our school system. Thinking about it, regarding the learning spaces, nothing has really changed since the Imperial era.”

Recent challenges, not least during the pandemic years, have already indicated the need for a radical change in the way of teaching and learning. The BAN (Bildungslandschaft Altstadt-Nord) school project, situated in Cologne’s old town, picks up on this notion and was largely facilitated by the ‘Montag Stiftung Jugend und Gesellschaft’ foundation.

As opposed to traditional classroom learning in an atmosphere of competition between the school systems stands the idea of an aggregation of know-how in the sense of ‘crowd thinking’. Therefore, the guiding design principle for the Cologne project was to bundle the existing institutions into a complete ‘educational necklace’ for all age groups.

Synergistic usage made it possible to plan and build in a space-, cost- and resource-efficient way. A large, accumulated volume of spaces was thus reduced to a minimum in building volume, integrated with sensibility and an eye for detail into the surrounding borough and public park area. Seven existing institutions, from day nursery through to high school, and from youth centre to night school, were combined to a whole new educational landscape. The project recently won both the KAP Cologne architectural prize and the Architekturpreis NRW 2021, and is shortlisted for the NIKE BDA-Architekturpreis.

At present, gernot schulz : architektur are planning a school for 1,700 pupils in Langenhagen. And in Weimar, again in liaison with the Montag foundation, as well as the IBA Thuringia, a school building with a nod to the Bauhaus modular box idea is in the making, which the office calls “possibly the most revolutionary school building within the Open Source principle”.

Open learning landscapes are created through architecture which can flexibly react to teaching demands parallel-wise to teachers and parents, in the role of the ‘third pedagogue’.

Raumdenker – Architekten revolutionieren die Bildungslandschaft

gernot schulz : architektur ist ein inhabergeführtes Architekturbüro mit 30 Mitarbeitern, welches es sich auf die Fahnen geschrieben hat, unser Bildungssystem mit Hilfe von Architektur in eine zeitgemäßere Weise des Lehrens und Lernens zu begleiten.

Innovative Schularchitektur mit dem Ziel einer offenen Lernlandschaft ist eine Mission, die dem Kölner Büro besonders am Herzen liegt: „Es gibt in unserer Gesellschaft nichts, was mehr veraltet ist als unser Schulsystem. Wenn wir darüber nachdenken, hat sich – zumindest was die Lernräume angeht – seit der Kaiserzeit wenig geändert.“

Nicht zuletzt in den Pandemie-Jahren deutlich geworden, bedarf es derzeit unbestreitbar einer grundsätzlichen sowie umfassenden Schulreform, die neue Wege des Lehrens und Lernens ermöglicht. Das Projekt BAN (Bildungslandschaft Altstadt-Nord) in der Kölner Altstadt greift diesen Gedanken nachhaltig auf und wurde in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Montag Stiftung Jugend und Gesellschaft entwickelt.

Im Gegenzug zur herkömmlichen, frontal ausgelegten Form des Lernens in einer Atmosphäre von Konkurrenz und Wettbewerb zwischen den Schulsystemen steht der Gedanke der Aggregation des Wissens im Sinne des ‚Crowd Thinking‘. Das führende Designprinzip für das Kölner Projekt war deshalb die Bündelung verschiedener vorhandener Institutionen zu einer kompletten ‚Bildungskette‘ für alle Altersgruppen.

Synergetische Nutzung der Räume ermöglichte eine raum-, kosten- und ressourcenschonende Art der Planung und des Bauens. Ein großes, akkumuliertes Bauvolumen wurde auf diese Weise minimalisiert und sensibel in das Viertel und den öffentlichen Park integriert. Sieben bestehende Institutionen von Kita bis Gymnasium, vom Jugendzentrum bis zur Abendschule wurden so Teil einer umfassenden, offenen Bildungslandschaft. Das Projekt gewann kürzlich den Kölner Architekturpreis KAP, den Architekturpreis NRW 2021 und ist in der engeren Wahl für den BDA Architekturpreise Nike.

Auch die Zukunft gilt bei gernot schulz : architektur im Besonderen dem Schulbau: Derzeit plant das Büro eine Schule für 1.700 Schüler in Langenhagen. Außerdem wird in Weimar, wiederum in Zusammenarbeit mit der Montag Stiftung sowie der IBA Thüringen, in Anlehnung an das Baukastenprinzip der Bauhaus-Ära der „wohl revolutionärste Schulbau der Schulbau Open Source” entwickelt.

So entstehen offene Lernlandschaften, in der die Architektur flexibel parallel zu Lehrern und Eltern als dritter Pädagoge auf die Anforderungen des Unterrichts reagieren kann.
