“A s architects, we want to create places that move people and awaken their longings: our buildings are meant to be contributions which are innovative, exciting and well-balanced in their simplicity and disposition of space, yet also functional and sustainable.” Prof. Eckhard Gerber

With rising global population figures, our cities and global metropolises expand rapidly too. The accompanying diversity of art and culture is reflected in an almost unlimited variety of form and shape in our buildings. Alongside this, it is also necessary to find the uniform in the variety – thus, well-organised, unravelling structures in architecture, as well as in urban development with high innovative strength; aesthetic and sustainable.

Since the foundation in 1966, Prof. Eckhard Gerber and his team have embraced this significant social task and have successfully realised over 250 worldwide projects since, while achieving more than 450 competition successes. Today, with 52 years of expertise, Gerber Architekten counts towards Germany’s largest and most experienced offices. Over 190 employees currently work in five locations, Dortmund, Hamburg, Berlin, Riyadh and Shanghai.

Architects and urban planners, landscape architects, engineers and interior designers, but also social scientists, futurologists and experts for sustainability are working together to find solutions for tasks that have become increasingly complex. This way, sustainable projects with a high degree of urbanistic and architectural quality, which can meet today’s diverse demands, are expected to develop.

‘Nobel Quran Oasis‘

In the future, the ‘Nobel Quran Oasis’ is due to stand amidst the barren, stony desert landscape of the enlightened town Al Madinah al Munawarah: a museum for the most important book of Islam. Such an architectural task is hardly solvable: No building’s structural shape – no matter how simple or how eccentric – can satisfy the humility of this special task and express the Quran’s dignity and significance. Based on these considerations, the drafting of a building with a certain structural shape was avoided and the structural substances were engulfed into the ground – namely through ‘digging off’ and creating hills. King Fahad National Library
Riyadh’s King Fahad National Library is one of the most important cultural buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Since its completion in 2015, it has become a pioneering impulse for the capital’s urban reorganisation and exemplarily lets modern and historic architecture become one entity. The new building is completely enclosed by an envelope and a canvas structure, while the interior of the new building contains the completely preserved old library, whose dome visibly comes out of the new building’s roof.

“For one thing, architecture is about the outer appearance and the integration into the surroundings for us, but it’s also about the inner spatial structure, about opening up rooms and the relationship between inside and outside. Thus, rooms should become a place, and therefore the place should become a social event.” Prof. Eckhard Gerber

Today, the many varieties of architectural expressions as opposed to earlier, uniform stylistic eras are especially impressive. Our contemporary architecture consists of very different, consistently reinvented and newly created, individual unicums which significantly shape the urban space. Hereby, architecture assumes an important role. Through structured spatial ideas, urbanistic approaches, overlaps and interconnections, it specifically determines urban development’s conditions. It is precisely for this reason that it is important to Gerber Architekten to cover a diverse task spectrum with their work. Therefore, the office can look back on a multitude of different references today.

Revitalisation of the Union Brewery

A new urban district has developed on the edge of Dortmund’s city centre through the revitalisation of the Union Brewery’s former industrial site. The driving force for the development of this new creative quarter was the conversion of the former Union Brewery’s winery tower, the U-Tower, turning it into a centre for art and creativity. The bright ‘U‘ did not only reawaken a widely visible landmark, but also created a new, central point of attraction for Dortmund’s visitors and inhabitants. Next to the U-Tower, two vocational colleges, a creative office block, as well as a public parking garage which has been put into the slope developed on a 20,000-square-metre-large area. (Completion of the ‘U-quarter‘ 2016)

Football stadium for Shanghai

A new football stadium for around 50,000 visitors that meets international standards is planned for Shanghai’s Pudong district. The stadium’s seemingly floating and curved shape already distinguishes itself from the cityscape from afar and independently blends into the adjoining landscape park with its clear design – an asymmetrically high shell. (Competition 2016)

CBD in Jinan, China

The strong economic development also leads to a progressive urbanisation of cities in China – like in the city of Jinan. In close cooperation with the state commission and in adhering to Jinan’s urban development concept’s design guidelines, a new office complex is planned in the Central Business District (CBD). The building ensemble consists of two office towers that are different in height and stand offset to one another but are connected through two connecting structures and a green courtyard. Through the off-centred position and the elevated design, ‘flowing through’ is possible in the public urban space. (Competition 2018)

Zukunftsarchitektur

(Wettbewerb 2016)

CBD in Jinan, China

(Wettbewerb 2018)
