From passion to product: Two women’s innovative ideas for the world of horses

The story of Equimero starts in 2015, with an old industrial sewing machine in a small storage room. Horse trainer Tina Meier, and Saskia Rohn, who works as an instructor for therapeutic riding, had countless ideas, a lot of idealism and the goal to make the world of horses more colourful and, above all, better – with harnesses made of biothane.

“Working as a horse trainer, I have seen a lot of equipment that is not appropriate or not very well thought through,” says Tina Meier, who founded Equimero, a small biothane manufacturer near Hanover. Together with Saskia Rohn she therefore developed a harness that is both customisable to a tee, thanks to innovative adjustment options, and multifunctional. Their work paid off quickly, as the product, called Equizaum®, received numerous awards at trade shows and from trade publications. More importantly, it didn’t take long to convince riders and instructors of different riding styles.

Further products followed as the advantages of the hand-made harness are obvious: Biothane is a synthetic material with a leather-like feel and many benefits. It doesn’t tear easily, requires minimal care – the harness is machine washable at 30 degrees – and is UV resistant. Plus, it is available in 29 colours and customers can individually configure their colour mix or even, as the icing on the cake, personalise the harness even further by adding a logo or the horse’s name. “It is also important for us that we realise our own ideas instead of simply using biothane to copy something that is already out there in leather,” adds product developer Saskia Rohn.

During the development phase, the products are not only tested on the two equine experts’ own horses, but also in cooperation with trainers, instructors for therapeutic riding and instructors. Internationally successful show and dressage riders, such as Alizée Froment, swear by the products that have been perfected to the tiniest detail and are horse-friendly. Competition riders, too, are increasingly keen on the colourful and innovative items. In France, for instance, Equimero has not only found a cooperation partner, but also a successful Grand Prix rider as a customer.

Two new products, a girth for therapeutic riding and a special head piece for horse driving, are already in the making. Meier and Rohn are by now working with seven colleagues in their own workshop to turn their many ideas into reality. Like them, they are passionately committed to the motto: ‘from passion to product’.

Von der Passion zum Produkt: Zwei Frauen und innovative Ideen für die Pferdewelt

Die Geschichte von Equimero beginnt 2015 mit einer alten Industrienähmaschine in einem 12 Quadratmeter großen Abstellraum. Pferdetrainerin Tina Meier und Reittherapeutin Saskia Rohn hatten unzählige Ideen, viel Idealismus und das Ziel vor Augen, die Pferdewelt bunter und besser zu machen – mit Zaumzeug aus Biothane.

„In meiner Trainertätigkeit habe ich viele unpassendes oder wenig durchdachtes Equipment gesehen“, erzählt Tina Meier, Gründerin von Equimero, einer kleinen Biothane-Manufaktur aus der Nähe von Hannover. Also entwickelte sie gemeinsam mit Saskia Rohn ein Zaumzeug, das einerseits durch innovative Einstellmöglichkeiten perfekt anpassbar ist und andererseits multifunktionell nutzbar. Der Erfolg ließ nicht lange auf sich warten: Der Equizaum® wurde mehrfach auf Messen und von Fachzeitschriften ausgezeichnet und überzeugte schnell und reitweisenübergreifend sowohl Reiter als auch Ausbilder.

Weitere Produkte folgten, denn die Vorteile des handgefertigten Zaumzeugs liegen klar auf der Hand: Biothane ist ein Kunststoff, welcher jedoch in der Haptik lederähnlich ist und viele Vorteile bietet: hohe Reißfestigkeit, minimaler Pflegeaufwand (das Zaumzeug kann einfach bei 30 Grad in die Waschmaschine), UV-Beständigkeit und nicht zuletzt die 29 Farben, die der Kunde mittels eines Konfigurators individuell zusammen stellen kann, um als i-Tüpfelchen sein Unikat mit einem Logo oder dem Namen seines Pferdes personalisieren zu lassen. „Wichtig ist uns außerdem“, so Produktentwicklerin Saskia Rohn, „dass wir eigene Ideen verwirklichen und nicht einfach aus Biothane nachbauen, was es aus Leder schon gibt.“

Getestet wird in den Entwicklungsphasen nicht nur an den eigenen Pferden, sondern auch in Kooperation mit Trainern, Therapeuten und Ausbildern. International erfolgreiche Show- und Dressurreiter wie zum Beispiel Alizée Froment schwören auf die bis ins kleinste Detail durchdachten, pferdefreundlichen Produkte. Und auch Turnierreiter finden zunehmend Gefallen an den farbenfrohen Innovationen. In Frankreich beispielsweise hat Equimero inzwischen nicht nur eine Kooperationspartnerin, sondern auch eine erfolgreiche Grand Prix Reiterin als Kundin.

Fragt man die beiden Erfinderinnen nach den nächsten Plänen, kommt die Antwort sofort: Ein Therapiegurt und ein spezielles Kopfstück für den Fahrsport sind bereits in Arbeit. Um die vielen Ideen auch handwerklich umzusetzen arbeiten Meier und Rohn inzwischen in ihrer eigenen Werkstatt mit sieben Kolleginnen, die das Motto ‚Von der Passion zum Produkt‘ genau so leben wie sie selbst.
