Woven carpets from the birthplace of Bauhaus

Carpet Concept creates woven carpet collections, with the quality label ‘Made in Germany’, in a restored Bauhaus building.

Only 62 kilometres from the Carpet Concept manufactory in Münchenbernsdorf, you will find Weimar – the birthplace of the Bauhaus style. Exactly 100 years ago, Walter Gropius founded the famous art school Bauhaus here. But the geographical proximity is not the only thing that the weaving mill Carpet Concept has in common with the Bauhaus philosophy.

Breaking down the barriers between art, industry and craftwork, Carpet Concept decided to create architecture-inspired textiles early on. With six weaving mills, Münchenbernsdorf was once an important base for the carpet industry. But five of these have now ceased operations. The fully renovated Carpet Concept weaving mill, with 60 employees, was the only one to survive. Innovative materials and unexpected carpet collections have ensured its future.

Working in a Bauhaus building

In addition to preserving jobs and the development of innovative, architecture-inspired carpets, Carpet Concept also began to carefully renovate the Bauhaus building, which features traditional production halls and a characteristic red brick façade. Aside from the weaving mill itself, you will find a showroom, a congress centre, the weavers’ kitchen and an insight into the cultural endeavours of the company. There is, for example, a popular exhibition about GDR tapestries.

Back in 1999, a very special carpet inspired by the famous Bauhaus weaver Margaretha Reichardt was weaved here. This carpet featured a graphic pattern and was given to the design centre Thuringia.
Now, in 2019, Carpet Concept celebrates the Bauhaus anniversary, the cultural roots of the company, and its innovation power. Produced with environmentally friendly methods in Thuringia, all carpets come with the certificate ‘Made in Germany’.

Sustainable NEO

The new NEO collection achieved much acclaim when it was recently presented at the most important trade fair for Scandinavian design – the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair. The NEO collection is produced with environment friendly methods and features free forms that create new combinations in lounges, living rooms or offices. Armchairs and small tables are combined to create casual living islands. Furthermore, the colours and textures perfectly match the tiles and flat materials of Carpet Concept. These are truly innovative products that capture the trend for natural, simple and healthy living.

Weben an der Bauhaus-Wiege

Carpet Concept webt ‚Made in Germany‘ prämierte Kollektionen in einem sanierten Bauhaus-Ensemble.

Nur durch 62 Kilometer Wiesen-Landschaft entfernt von der Carpet Concept Manufaktur in Münchenbernsdorf, befindet sich die Wiege des Bauhauses. Weimar. Vor genau 100 Jahren gründete Walter Gropius hier das berühmte Staatliche Bauhaus. Nicht nur die räumliche Nähe verband die Teppichbodenweberei von Carpet Concept schon immer mit dem Denken und Arbeiten des Bauhauses. Dem Durchbrechen der Barrieren zwischen Kunst, Industrie und Handwerk folgte Carpet Concept schon früh mit dem Leitgedanken, eine neue, textile Architektur zu kreieren. Früher war Münchenbernsdorf bedeutendes Zentrum in der Teppichindustrie und blickte auf sechs Webereien. Fünf von ihnen haben ihren Betrieb eingestellt. Geblieben ist die Carpet Concept Teppichboden-Weberei, heute saniert und Arbeitgeber von 60 Mitarbeitern. Innovative Materialien und überraschende Teppichboden-Kollektionen sichern hier die Zukunft.

Arbeiten im Bauhaus-Ensemble

Mit dem Erhalt von Arbeitsplätzen, der Entwicklung innovativer und architekturgeprägter Teppichböden leitete Carpet Concept ebenfalls die behutsame Restaurierung des Bauhaus-Ensembles ein, das heute mit seinen Produktionshallen, Räumen und der charakteristisch geprägten Fassade aus rotem Backstein als Besonderheit gilt. Neben der Weberei gibt es hier einen Showroom, ein Kongresszentrum, eine Webküche und Einblicke in das kulturelle Engagement des Unternehmens. Zum Beispiel eine Ausstellung, die bundesweites Interesse erzeugte und noch zu sehen ist – eine Sammlung von DDR-Wandteppichen.

Einen besonderen Teppich webte man hier auch im Jahr 1999 nach Vorlage der berühmten Bauhaus-Weberin Margaretha Reichardt. Ein Teppich mit grafischem Muster, der später dem Design-Zentrum Thüringen zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. 2019 feiert Carpet Concept ebenfalls das Bauhaus-Jubiläum. Die kulturellen Wurzeln, die für das Unternehmen prägend sind und deren Innovationskraft bis heute die prämierten Teppichboden-Kollektionen beeinflussen, die umweltschonend und in Thüringen „Made in Germany“ entstehen.

NEO sorgt für Nachhaltigkeit

Darunter auch die neuen abgepassten Teppiche NEO. Eine besondere Kollektion – die jüngst auf der wichtigsten Messe für Skandinavisches Design, der Stockholm Furniture Fair, stark gefragt war. NEO wird umweltschonend produziert und sorgt mit freien Formen für neue Anordnungen in Lounge, Wohnbereich oder Büro. In Kombination mit Sesseln und kleinen Tischen entstehen lässige Inseln und sorgen ohne viel Aufwand für ein neues Wohngefühl. Die neuen Solitäre passen als modulares System in Farben und Texturen zu Fliesen und Bahnenware von Carpet Concept. Innovative Produkte für den Trend zum natürlichen, unkomplizierten wie gesunden Wohnen.
