Nestled amidst green vineyards close to the river Rhine, winery Noll is a family-run business that is a living example of the art of winemaking. Here, manual work produces extraordinary wines.
Located in the famous Markgräflerland wine-growing region, the team at the family-owned and family-run Noll estate is passionate about true wine craftsmanship. “We work according to the maxim ‘as much as necessary, as little as possible’,” stresses Fabian Noll, a second-generation winemaker, who actively promotes Pinot wines as the second chairman of Generation Pinot, an association of young Baden winemakers.
The Noll family’s work is marked by close attention to the land, soil, produce and a different approach to the winemaking process. “We harvest by hand,” explains Noll. “This allows us to decide which grapes are ripe and healthy and to discard leaves, branches and the like – a process that greatly enhances the quality of our wine. We use as few additives as possible and age our wines also in barrique barrels; an unusual practice in our region that lends our wines their characteristic flavour,” adds the winemaker.
While the Noll winery grows a variety of grapes, namely Chasselas, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, Noll is particularly passionate about Chasselas grapes. “Chasselas is one of the oldest grape variety in the world and has been known since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Chasselas wines have a mild acidity and a moderate, rather low alcohol content. Their flavour is restrained and discreet: They are the perfect companion for light dishes such as fish, poultry or light cheeses.”
The Noll family’s wines can be enjoyed in many different ways, as Noll confirms: “Enjoying wine is one of our greatest pleasures. We regularly organise farm festivals on the estate and tours of our winery or wine tastings are possible at any time. By prior arrangement we also serve regional specialities such as snack platters or ‘Schäufele’ (a regional speciality) with potato salad. And in spring we also sell asparagus, which goes perfectly with our Pinot Gris or Chardonnay wines.”
In order to make their fine wines available to a wider clientele and to reposition their products in an ever-changing economic environment, the Noll winery and brand have just undergone a successful relaunch. While their wines are available on-site or online, the winemakers are now looking for new distributors for their fine wines to reach a larger national and international client base.
