Enjoy 31 Days of German Riesling this July

31 Days of German Riesling is a month-long campaign that celebrates the star of German wine varieties; the Riesling. Multi-award-winning German wine merchant The WineBarn recommend three of their favourite and affordable Rieslings that you can enjoy throughout July.

The grapes for this refreshing, classic and elegant white wine came from a 20 year old Riesling vineyard in the middle of the Aulerde site. The harvest was at the end of September / beginning of October, once the vines had produced mature Riesling berries with intense fruit flavours that had not yet reached the Spätlese level.

On the nose, this wine delivers typical Riesling fruit aromas of lime, apple and white peach. On the palate, it is elegant with a fresh acidity and minerality. The grapes that this quality wine was produced from were grown in the winery’s Deidesheim vineyards, where the soil is rich in loam, clay, sandstone, basalt and limestone.

Tamlyn Currin, talented and expressive wine writer for Jancis Robinson describes this organic dry white as smelling, “…’grainy’, like pear skin. Wonderful stone dust, salty limes and cumin dust. The wine shows a real flinty clench, shaped into flint-carved edges. Amazing focus and precision for a village-level wine, and the fruit is wrapped around a remarkably strong, powerful spine. Racy, but so intentional. This is punching above its weight.”

The era of the Rotliegend was a time of intensified volcanic activity. The Rotliegend volcanoes mainly produced quartz porphyry in the form of lava flows. In this era it was very hot and dry, the red colour of the soil still shows this and is due to iron compounds that were formed in this climate. The pressure of overlays of clay silt and loose sand created a solid rock, which is geologically know today as the “Rotliegende”, which is where this wonderfully lively and precise Riesling got its name.
