Culture Calendar: May 2019
Endless blue skies, blossoming trees everywhere and plenty to do. This month is absolutely packed with a great range of colourful dance events, fantastic culture gigs and a wonderful selection of culinary highlights for everyone.
Dance festival Zürich Tanzt, Zurich (3 – 5 May)
Around 175 dance events will take place during these three jam-packed festival days across Zurich. More than 15,000 enthusiastic visitors attend the vast range of courses, performances, movies and parties all centred around the art of dance. Pack your dancing shoes.

Open Air Gallery, Berlin (5 May)
During this event, the distinctive bridge Osterbaumbrücke, between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, becomes a true art mile. More than a hundred artists showcase paintings, sculptures and photography during the Open Air Gallery. Both professionals and new talent are presenting their works of art.

Media Convention Re:publica, Berlin (6 – 8 May)
This event started as a small blogger meeting in 2007 but over the years it has become one of the world’s largest conferences on digital culture. At this convention, international media professionals, entrepreneurs and academics share their knowledge and discuss the future of the information society. An absolute must for anyone who is media-savvy or those wanting to learn more about it.

Pictoplasma Conference & Festival Berlin (8 – 12 May)
From award-winning animation, graphic design, illustration and avant-garde urban art to viral internet phenomena: this year’s Pictoplasma festival presents true virtuosos of contemporary character design and art. The artists challenge visitors to change their point of view and way of thinking when it comes to facial patterns. Pictoplasma demonstrates the power of character at its finest and is held at various venues across the city.

Carnival of Cultures, Berlin (18 – 21 May)
Berlin turns into a big party celebrating cultural diversity across Germany’s vibrant capital during the four days around Pentecost. The celebrations finish with the grand finale: a street parade in Kreuzberg on Pentecost Sunday with thousands of dancers and musicians, and plenty of people partying with them.

70 years of the Berlin Airlift Festival, Berlin (12 May)
More than 50,000 people are expected to join the celebrations at Tempelhof Airport. The Berlin blockade imposed by the Soviet Union on 24 June 1948 ended 70 years ago on 12 May 1949. West Berlin could again be supplied by land, and the legendary airlift of the Americans, British and French, among others,became unnecessary. Berlin celebrates this historical event and has lined up a great programme for the entire family.
Genuss Festival, Vienna (10 – 12 May)
The Genuss Festival comes to Vienna city park each May and brings a marvellous selection of culinary specialities from Austria. This includes Viennese wine and escargots, poppy seed oil from the Waldviertel, Carinthian honey, saffron from the Wachau or spicy cheese from Vorarlberg. It will certainly be an absolute highlight for your taste buds.

Food Zurich (16 May – 26 June)
Traditional Swiss cuisine meets global culinary trends at the Food Zurich festival. Whether you are a foodie, a gourmet chef or simply an amateur cook, there is no better place to be. Fabulous food and amazing chefs can be experienced throughout.

International Museums Day, Germany (19 May)
This is a worldwide event that aims to raise awareness of museums’ contribution to our society and culture. Many museums across Germany open their doors and Berlin, with its many different museums, is a particularly good place to make the most of this day. There will be plenty of guided tours and special events so there is the right option available for everyone.

Storytelling Festival, Graz (24 – 25 May)
This year, Folke Tegetthoff’s ‘International Storytelling Festival’ returns and celebrates its 32nd anniversary with lots of storytelling magic.It should come as no surprise that it has turned into one of the world’s most important storytelling festivals and today it is the largest of its kind in Europe – as well as the only one in Austria.
Formula E Race – Berlin ePrix 2018 (25 May)
Yet again, Berlin hosts the all-electric Formula E Championship, this year for the tenth time. The race will take place at the former Tempelhof Airport and 22 new Gen2 cars will be competing during the 12 rounds. Get ready Berlin: Formula E is back!
Klangfrühling, Schlaining (25 May – 2 June)
This is an annual music festival offering a range of different classical music events merged with culinary highlights. This year’s motto is ‘Fly with me to the moon’. Grand music and fabulous food: what more could we want?
16th Festival for Short Film, Animation & Music Videos, Vienna (28 May – 2 June)
The VIS is Austria’s biggest short-film festival and a must for any short-film buff. It is a great platform for showcasing international short films with a maximum length of 30 minutes,as well as seeing works from newcomers and local talent.
